Top Tips On Maintaining Invisalign Alignment Trays

Invisalign is a great option for correcting your smile. Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign is much faster and much more comfortable. In addition, Invisalign alignment trays or “aligners” are made of a thin, transparent plastic that’s nearly invisible. This means that nobody needs to know that you’re in the middle of orthodontic treatment.

If you want to make the most out of your Invisalign experience, the team at Mendota Springs Dentistry put together some of our best tips for caring for your aligners:

1. Take Your Aligners Out to Eat and Drink

Some patients find this to be inconvenient, but you should never drink anything besides water while wearing your aligners. This is because drinking and eating while wearing Invisalign can stain your aligners, and some foods can even bend, warp, or completely damage them. The same is true of hot foods and beverages.

2. Keep Aligners In Their Case When You’re Not Wearing Them

You’ll want to remove your aligners when eating and drinking, so you’ll need to make sure you have somewhere to put them. Dr. Zhang or Dr. Jacoby will give you a pair of cases to use for this exact purpose. If you don’t protect your aligners in the case, you could end up bending or damaging them. You also risk misplacing them and losing a set of aligners, which can delay your treatment significantly. Consistently keeping your aligners safe in their case is the best way to make sure they’re not damaged or misplaced.

3. Clean Your Aligners Properly

You should rinse your aligners with warm water whenever you take them out, including every time you eat or drink. This will help reduce bacterial buildup. In addition, any time you brush your teeth, your aligners should also be cleaned. However, don’t just brush your Invisalign trays with toothpaste. Using toothpaste and a brush can scratch your aligners. Use a gentle antibacterial soap that rinses away cleanly, and warm (never hot!) water, since hot water can warp and damage your aligners.

Your Dog Can’t Resist Your Invisalign Either, But For Very Different Reasons

If you wear Invisalign to straighten your teeth, congratulations! You’ve chosen one of the most effective ways to achieve straight teeth without the hassle and look of traditional braces. It is an irresistible choice. Invisalign uses clear aligner trays to straighten your teeth that are virtually invisible. However, your dog will sniff them out if they are left out of your mouth for any period of time. Dogs LOVE anything that comes out of your mouth. They’re irresistible to dogs, but for very different reasons.

There are two reasons why dogs tend to sniff out any mouthpieces and want to chew them.

  • Dogs are attracted to your saliva for some reason. We’re not sure why this is, but it could have something to do with their heightened sense of smell.
  • Many devices used in your mouth can feel similar to a chew toy. Therefore, they act of chewing on your mouth piece helps their teeth feel better while destroying what’s supposed to be helping your teeth!

There are two things you can do to help prevent your dog from using your Invisalign or mouthpiece as a chew toy.

  • Keep it in your mouth. When it’s in your mouth, it can be in your dog’s mouth.
  • Utilize the case your dentist or orthodontist gave you to store it while you’re eating or not wearing it.

At Mendota Springs, we are here to help you with all of your dental needs, even if it means replacing a chewed up mouthpiece or Invisalign clear aligner tray.

3 Reasons To Give Yourself The Gift Of Invisalign

It’s December! Mendota Springs Dental would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season. It’s a month of many multicultural holiday celebrations such as, Ramadan, Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Omisoka and many others. It’s a time when you might be making your wish list for yourself and your loved ones. Consider these three reasons you should add Invisalign to your holiday wish list.

Time
Invisalign treatment requires less time, in most cases, than braces. You also typically spend less time in the dental office as well. Patients usually need to visit the office every 8-10 weeks. Invisalign patients also experience less emergency appointments because there are no wires or brackets that break. The average time for treatment is 16 months.

Appearance
Invisalign is great for solving deep bites, rotations and crowding. In the past, the only option for solving aesthetic problems with your teeth was braces. Invisalign can fix these problems in a less visually invasive way. This option allows you to smile without metal being shown in your everyday smile.

Daily Care
When wearing braces you must always take into consideration the sacrifices you must make in your eating and dental care habits. You need to pause from eating popcorn, chips, bagels, nuts, certain candies, apples, corn on the cob and more. When cleaning your teeth you need to navigate the braces to get between and through the wires and brackets. Invisalign affords easy cleaning and eating options that do not interrupt your regular habits.

At Mendota Springs Dentistry, Dr. Zhang and Dr. Jacoby would love to discuss this option with you.
